August 2023
Welcome.
Here are my highlights from the past month, including a few things that caught my eye from elsewhere on the web and what I’m focusing on for at least the next 31 days.
✨ Highlights from last month #
- Read Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn.
- Watched season 2 of The White Lotus. I was surprised to see it totally live up to the first season.
- Published Moving away from Notion, Dumbing down the Apple Watch and Simple project management.
- Received my Zoe test results and started improving my diet.
- Switched from Raivo OTP to 2FAS following their acquisition and recommendations by Bryce Wray.
- Improved the colour palette on my personal website. I plan on re-writing the CSS from scratch, in the near future.
- Made a ton of progress with my SCSS starter which has turned into a little framework of sorts.
🕸 Elsewhere on the web #
- “…if you can figure out what paying customers need, want, & are ready to lay out actual cash to buy, and give it to them? It’s always good times. The booms will never be as big, but neither will the crashes. So don’t get caught up in FOMO. Bring it back to business fundamentals. Make things people want to pay for. Build yourself a profit.“ Amy Hoy in The boom times are over.
- “Google takes URL-level Core Web Vitals data from CrUX into account when deciding where to rank you in a search results page. They do not use Lighthouse or PageSpeed Insights scores.” One of many key insights from Harry Roberts in Core Web Vitals for Search Engine Optimisation: What Do We Need to Know?
- The joy of simplicity in web development. I’m a big fan of Chris Ferdinandi’s approach to web development. I’ve been working in a similar way for a number of years, much of which I’ve learnt from Chris.
- Writing CSS In 2023: Is It Any Different Than A Few Years Ago?. Geoff Graham covers new and upcoming CSS features.
- Elliot Jay Stocks has complied a super checklist for choosing type for Google fonts.
- Ollie Williams offers some insight into working with system fonts in System font deep dive.
🗓 What I’m up to this month #
- Launching my new SCSS/CSS starter.
- Finishing up the first part of Practical Hugo.
